He died on 10 March 1889 at Troupsburg, Steuben County, NY, USA.

Brown says that Doris Young furnished him the information on Edwin and his family. Doris suggests a birth date for Edwin of 1847/1848, but this would seemingly make him much too young to have children of the age indicated. The Compiler can not find Edwin in any census so he holds this family as suspect.

Charles Marion Hotchkin

M, (9 October 1842 - 4 August 1896)
Charles Marion Hotchkin was born on 9 October 1842 at Sangerfield, Oneida County, NY, USA. He was age 7 at the 1850 census. His obituary gives the birth year as 1843.1 He was the son of Mark Caldwell (M. C.) Hotchkin and Catherine M. Springer. He married Emma Louise Palmer at Utica, Oneida County, NY, USA, on 30 May 1866.2 Charles Marion Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1870 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Marion C., age 27, b NY, dry goods sales; wife Emma, age 24, b NY; dau Nettie, age 9/12, b IL; and a servant, Kate Thanley, age 18. Chicago birth records show a child, C. Emma, born on 17 Jan, 1882. This record gives C. Marion's age as 28, which would make his birth in 1854. This date seems to be a mistake, based on other numerous information..
The newspaper clipping attached as a photo appeared in the Waterville Times regarding Hotchkin & Palmer after the Chicago fire.
He resided at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA, in 1882. He died on 4 August 1896 at Marinette, Marinette County, WI, USA, at age 53. The Chicago Historical Society says that he died on a trip to Wisconsin. His obituary published in the Waterville Times gives the death on 5 August..3,4,5 He was buried at Rosehill Cemetery, at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA. His obituary claims that he was buried in Oak Woods Cemetery..

Charles Marion Hotchkin must have left his Sangerfield home prior to 1860 as he does not appear with his family in the 1860 census and by 1870 he is listed in the Chicago census. A C. M. Hotchkin appears in the Onondaga Co. Directory, living in Syracuse and working for Marquisee and Co., a Ladies Cloaks and Furnishing Co. The complete ownership was listed as C. M. Hotchkin, A. Marquisee, and W. Williams. His wife, Emma's DAR membership refers to him as C. M. Hotchkin. Marion appears in the 1873 city directory of Chicago as C. Marion Hotchkin, residing at 148 25th St and as Palmer and Co.( C. M. Hotchkin & E. P. Palmer) Cloaks and Millinery at 137-9 State St, and he continues to appear in the directories in a like manner through 1883. The next available directory, 1895, has him as a member of the Stock Exchange and President of the Union Trust and Security, Sisterville, W VA. His home is now in Evanston, IL. At the 1896 issue of the city directory, he is also listed as President of the Fearless Oil Co. C. M. Hotchkin is listed as a Deacon of the Plymouth and South Congregational Church in Chicago during the year 1885. This combined church was formed in 1872, under the pastorate of Rev W. A. Bartlett, and located at Wabash Ave and Eldridge Court. A C. H. Hotchkin is recorded as a Master of the Lakeside Masonic Lodge #739 for the year 1880.6

John C. Hotchkin

M, (30 October 1847 - 14 January 1930)
John C. Hotchkin was born on 30 October 1847 at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA.1,2,3 He was the son of Mark Caldwell (M. C.) Hotchkin and Jennette M. Hovey. He married Henriette J. Locke at Holt, Clay County, MO, USA, on 14 February 1872. John C. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1880 at Banner Twp, Rush County, KS, USA. The census lists the family as: John Hotchkins, age 38, b NY; wife Henryette, age 31, b IL; dau Clara, age 10, b IL;son Augustus, age 6, b Co; son Alison, age 3, b KS; Census taker had crossed out Little at Ally's name.. He resided at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, USA, in 1911. He died on 14 January 1930 at Los Angeles County, CA, USA, at age 82.4 He was buried on 18 January 1930 at Valhalla Memorial Park (Pierce Bros.), at Burbank, Los Angeles County, CA, USA. Lot 4449, Sp 2.

John C. Hotchkin’s death certificate said that he was a retired merchant and had lived in California for 20 years. At the time of his death, he lived at 218 S. Elmwood, Burbank, CA. His death was caused by Myocarditis. This certificate cleared up a problem with his mothers maiden name. Earlier records had it as LLovey due to difficulty in reading these records. The proper name is Jennette Hovey. We know that John was with his parents at the 1850 census of Sangerfield, NY and still there at the special 1855 census. He is not found again until the 1880 census of Shawnee Co, KS, where he has a wife and two children. This census says that his oldest child, Gussie was born in Colorado in 1875 so we know that he must have lived somewhere in Colorado, but we have no further information on this location. John is also listed in the 1900 census of St. Joseph, Berrien Co., MI, (78118) with his wife Henrietta and step daughter Clarrisa (Clara). At this census they say that only two of their children are still alive and we know that Clara and Allen were alive after this date; so Augustus or Gussie must have died before this date. John was a witness at the wedding of his sister in Berrien Co, MI in Jan 1898 along with his brother, Robert Henry who was called Robert C. We next find him in Portland, OR from listings in the Portland City Directories. He was there at least in 1911, but the Directories are incomplete so we cannot be sure of the time that he spent in Portland. While in Portland, he lived with his son, Allen H. Hotchkin at 921 E. 40th Street. The Los Angeles City Directory of 1912 has J. C. Hotchkin residing at 627 S. Grand, in the 1914 directory it is John C. at 219 Hamlet, and the 1920 directory has him at 1116 Spence, the home of his son Allen H. Later he lived in Burbank, CA and is buried there in the Valhala Cemetery, beside his wife Henrietta and son Allen. A Deed recorded in Oneida Co, NY in 1894 refers to a wife named Etta but obviously this is Henrietta as we know that they were married before this date and after this date, as they are buried together. The 1920 Census has a Cristian Motor or Mather, age 49, born in Illinois, listed as a daughter, living with John.

The Death Certificate gives his birth and death dates, as well as his birth state of New York. His wife's name is indicated by the initials M. C. It is known that Robert designed at least one church in Fresno. This information comes from the files at the Los Angeles City Library.
His obituary appeared in A Guide to Historic Homes in Fresno as as follows:"Robert Hotchin was born in New York on July 10, 1859. Before settling in Fresno, California, in 1904, Hotchkin practiced architecture in Chicago. In Fresno he affiliated with McDougall Bros., a pioneer California architecture firm that maintained its principal office in San Francisco at that time. After the 1906 earthquake, McDougall Bros. closed its Fresno office to concentrate on a large backlog of work associated with the reconstruction of San Francisco. Hotchkin also relocated to the Bay Area to work for B. G. McDougall. In 1912, Hotchkin was awarded his licence to practice architecture in California. Before returning to Fresno the following year, he managed construction of the $1 million Standard Oil Building in San Francisco.
Hotchkin joined A. C. Swartz & Son, a Fresno architectural firm, in 1913. Shortly thereafter, the new firm of Swartz, Hotchkin and Swartz designed the exquisite Coalinga Carnegie Library, now demolished. Other early Fresno projects included the R. W. Byxbee Home on Olive Avenue, the Turnball Flats on Blackstone Avenue, the San Joaquin Bakery at San Benito and P Streets, and the A. W. Burdick Home in the Wilson Tract. Swartz, Hotchkin and Swartz also designed the Walker Ranch House at Yettem, California.
Hotchkin opened an independent office in 1915. Among his most prominent extant works in downtown Fresno are the First Church of Christ Scientist (1916) and Temple Beth Israel (1923). The striking Christian Science edifice, designed in an imposing local adaptation of the Boston Mother Church tradition, and the exotically detailed synagogue, now used as a community youth center, still front one another on Calaveras Street. In 1917, Hotchkin designed residences for Minnie Sachs on Pine Avenue and Elizabeth Hagan at Floradora and Wishon, in what would later become known as the Tower District.
Robert Hotchkin died in Fresno on August 18, 1929, at the age of 70. At the time of his death he resided at 998 Wilson Avenue with his wife, Madge Child Hotchkin (1864-1943)."
