Alfred J. Hotchkin

M, (2 May 1842 - 7 January 1921)
Alfred J. Hotchkin was born on 2 May 1842 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, USA.1 He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Hotchkin and Jane M. Little. Alfred J. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1860 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY. The census lists the family as: A. J.,Hotchkin age 28. b NY, Saddlery Mfg., $12000, $3000; wife Cornelia, age 26, b NY.. He married Cornelia Patten at NY, USA, in 1868. Cornelia's orbituary gives their wedding date.. He resided at Frederick County, VA, USA, in 1890. Alfred J. Hotchkin died on 7 January 1921 at Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY, USA, at age 78.2 He was buried at Waterville Cemetery, at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA. Sec 2, Lot 108.

The Village Directories of Jefferson Co. lists Alfred J. Hotchkin as a boarder in the home of his father, B. F. Hotchkin, 29 Clinton St., Watertown, NY. At the 1870 Census, he is living close to other member of his family in Watertown, with his wife Cornelia. They have no children.
Alfred owned an interest in a Carriage Works in the city of Syracuse, NY and documents at the Onondaga Historical Association tell a story of this enterprise. "A new carriage, boxed for shipment, fell from the wagon of Hotchkin’s & Wilder yesterday, as it was being conveyed to the railroad for shipment. This is the second mishap of that kind that has occurred to the firm within a few days." (Syracuse Std 1 May 1884). Another account from the Syracuse Journal, 23 Sep 1884 tells of the bankruptcy of the firm of Hotchkin & Wilder. "The bankruptcy was due to the death of a Director of Importers and Traders at the National Bank of New York who secured loans for Hotchkin & Wilder." This death stopped the loans needed for operation. A clipping dated, Syracuse Standard 17 Jan 1885, said, "Yesterday, W. B. Clark of Waterloo, assignee of the insolvent estate of Hotchkin & Wilder, was in the city negotiating for the sale of the tools and machinery of the bankrupt, to a proposed new firm of carriage manufacturers, provided a satisfactory arrangement can be made with P. W. Fobes for a lease of the works in Geddes." Hotchkin must have resumed the business later because the Onondaga Historical Association has a picture of a buggy, which appeared in the Herald on 15 Feb 1888, which claims, "The best general purpose wagon, patented 25 January 1887." The files include information on a later business failure. This one is titled, "The Hotchkin Failure," and dated 11 July 1888. It says that, "the assets of Cornelia P. Hotchkin, wife of Alfred J., has been assigned to Hiram W. Plumb for benefit of her creditors." The cause of this failure was a fire that occurred about 9 June. The article claims that there was a total of $34,573.11 of Notes signed by A. J. Hotchkin or Cornelia P. Hotchkin as part of the liabilities, besides 101 employees owed money. The total liabilities, not covered by assets, amounted to $130,936.95. The files also contain a letter dated, 16 July 1890 in which Alfred J. Hotchkin assigns $600.00 of his rights and title to the estate of his mother, Jane M. Hotchkin, to Jane Livingston Armour in exchange for a $500.00 loan. In a letter dated, 9 August 1890, Saratoga Springs, NY, the Note was returned to Cornelia P. Hotchkin in exchange for $500.00.
Alfred is listed in the Syracuse City Directories of 189798 and 189899 as a Commercial Traveler, living at 213 and 215 Green St. His birth and death are recorded in the records of Waterville Cemetery, and he is buried with his wife Cornelia.3,4,5

The Benjamin Cleveland Family Genealogy, by Edmund Janes Cleveland, identifies him as Josiah Bacon Hotchkin, husband of Keziah Auston. He appears in the 1830 census in Camden, Oneida Co as Josiah B. Hotchkiss and in the 1840 census of Watertown as J.B. Hotchin. Oneida Co., NY real estate records show him as the Grantee of property from John Tower and his wife. The 1850 census finds him with his wife and seven children in Watertown, Jefferson Co., NY.      The Oakes Genealogy and Family History of Jefferson Co. says that he first married Mary Ann Oakes and they had four daughters. These four would be Charlotte, Malona, Mary A. and Caroline. The Oakes Genealogy gives his second marriage to Keziah Austin (not Auston) of Norway, Herkimer Co., NY. The Horace Gillette Cleveland, Cleveland Family Genealogy, also identifies Josiah and his second marriage to Kezia Austin. From this marriage, Josiah had two sons and three daughters, Helen, William H., Julia, Emily, and Herbert B. The birth and relationships of all these children are supported by federal censuses. Hotchkins of Watertown, Mary Ann Beutell, wife of Joseph Beutell of Lyme, Huron Co., OH, Caroline Moffat, wife of Joseph N. Moffatt, (note double tt the second time) of Rodman, NY, all of full age. The document goes on to list Helen Hotchkin, William H. Hotchkin, F. Hotchkin, Emily Hotchkin, and Herbert B. Hotchkin of Watertown the four mentioned having no general guardian. Alice Edwards Harris, in her family notes, says that he was called Bacon and married the daughter of a judge. The family was members of the First Presbyterian Church of Watertown and there is a baptism records under the name of Hotchkiss, (Unreadable), Mary Ann, Charlotte and Elizabeth, 1835.
An obituary on Josiah appears in a Waterville, NY newspaper, dated 18 August 1855, saying that he had been born in Waterville and gone to Watertown in 1833. He was a Senior Partner in J.B. & B.F. Hotchkin. He had been on a trip to Terre Haute, IN and was taken sick at the home of a soninlaw near Sandusky and immediately hastened home by railroad, accompanied by his daughter. She was the daughter of Leonard Smith and Emeline Derrick. She married Albert Leet Hotchkin Sr. at Troy, Rensselaer County, NY, USA, on 13 February 1861.1 Delia M. In 1891 Albert Jr. is a clerk at Collins Bros and in 1892 he is listed as "removed to Seabeck, WA." Albert and his family operated the general store at Seabeck, WA during a time when Seabeck was expected to be the major port, as opposed to Seattle. After the lumber mill burned across the road from Albert's store, the town disappeared and presently nothing is left except a post office, a very small store and a few homes. The Compiler and his wife Cathy spent a very pleasant day investigating Seabeck and the historical collection regarding the town.
