     Harvey A. Hotchkin was born on 30 September 1870 at Washtenaw County, MI, USA.1 He was the son of Francis L. Hotchkin and Anna Elizabeth Laing. Harvey A. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1900 at Green Oak Twp, Livingston County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Harvey A., age 30, b 9-1869; Laborer living with John D. Shaffer.. He married Velma May Decker at Saline, Washtenaw County, MI, USA, on 30 September 1907.2 Harvey A. Hotchkin died in 1938 at Eaton County, MI, USA.3 He was buried at South Center Eaton Cemetery, at Eaton County, MI, USA.3

     We know that Harvey was still alive in August 1914 because he was referenced in his brothers probated Will and was living in Eaton Rapids, Eaton Co., MI at that time.

Ernest Hotchkin

     Ernest Hotchkin was born on 15 August 1874 at Washtenaw County, MI, USA.1,2,3 He was the son of Francis L. Hotchkin and Anna Elizabeth Laing. He married Rosetta Palmer at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, MI, USA, on 16 October 1893.4
     Attached is a possible marriage of Ernest in 1902. This person is unknown and for a number of reasons does not fit.
Ernest Hotchkin married Tina Drefke on 4 February 1903 at Ogden, Lenawee County, MI, USA. At the time of marriage she lived in Ogden and he in Saline according to marriage records. Thes records say that he had one previous mariage and she none. Married by Emit Mason minister of United Presbyterian Church..5 He married Catherine R. Metzger at Saline, Washtenaw County, MI, USA, on 15 May 1908. Ernest Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1910 at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, MI. The census lists the family as: Ernest Hotchkin, 35 (1874), married once, 2 years, farmer, both parents born in MI; wife Catherine, 43, Married twice, 6 children 6 living, born Germany, both parents born in Germany, naturized in 1883.. He was a Teamster in 1910. He died on 14 August 1914 at Univ. Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, MI, USA, at age 39.6,7,3 He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, at Saline, Washtenaw County, MI, USA. Plot A-5.

     Ernest's birth is recorded in Washtenaw Co. Records, Vol 2, pg 50, and his death in 1914 records, page 23. A gravestone in his fathers plot, Plot #A-5, and burial records give his birth and death. He was married to Rosette Palmer on 16 October 1893 in Ann Arbor, MI by E.B. Pond, J.P. and witnessed by Anna Palmer of Saline and Frank Kennedy of Ann Arbor (Washtenaw Co. Records, Vol 7, pg 140, 1893). His parents were reported as Frank L. Hotchkin and Anna Lane; Rosetta's as Oliver Palmer and Anna Collum. On 15 May 1908 he married Katherine R. Metzgar Maurer at which time he said that he had been married twice before. The wedding was witnessed by M. J. Hotchkin of Milan and conducted by Theo. G. Rapsdorf. There is no information as to the identify of M. J. Hotchkin.

Ella L. Bateman

Ella Bateman Hotchkin
     Ella was born at MI, USA, on 10 May 1871.1 She was the daughter of James Bateman and Miranda Silina Croy. She married Charles Melvin Hotchkin at Concord, Jackson County, MI, USA, on 6 September 1894. Their marriage record says that they had both been married once before. They were married by Edwin French MG, the marriage witnessed by Sarah French..2 Ella died on 1 November 1946 at Spring Arbor, Jackson County, MI, USA, at age 75.3 She was buried at Spring Arbor Cemetery, at Spring Arbor, Jackson County, MI, USA. Lot 420, Grave #4.

     Ella's marriage to Charles is recorded in the Jackson County Vital Records. Charles and Ella were married by Edwin French, MG; and the wedding appication says that he was a thresher, lived in Spring Arbor and born in Concord ( We believe that it was Spring Arbor). According to their application, both had been previously married; but if so, we have no records as to whom. Ella parents and her brother and sister are described in a publication of the Spring Arbor Historical Committee; Spring Arbor 1830 to 1980. Ella's sister Cora married Edward Cook and Charles and Ella are buried in the Cook Family plot of the Spring Arbor Cemetery, Lot 420, grave #4. Ella was the station agent at the Spring Arbor Depot in the early 1900's and lived all of her life in Spring Arbor. She cared for her grandchildren as her daughter was a polio victim.

She died on 17 September 1949 at Spring Arbor, Jackson County, MI, at age 52.1 She was buried at Spring Arbor Cemetery, at Spring Arbor, Jackson County, MI, USA.

     The 1910 census finds her living with her parents in Jackson, MI. A publication by the Spring Arbor Historical Committee, Spring Arbor 1830-1980, says that she had Polio and was bed ridden and that her parents took care of her and her 4 children. Mrs Beverly Schwartz, Chairman of the Spring Arbor Historical Committee, gives her birth, death, and burial dates. Una Belle operated a telephone exchange for the Volunteer Fire Department (from her bed) for a number of years.

     Hugh Jerome Hotchkin was born on 23 November 1885 at Mitchell, Davison County, SD, USA. World War II Draft records also give this birth date and says that he was born in Montrose, SD. He gives his sister Hannah Mary (Mrs Ernest Thomas) as his permanent contact.1,2 He was the son of Earnest Frank Hotchkin and Anna (Annie) Miller Mueller. Hugh Jerome Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1900 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Hugh J, age 13, born 11-1886 in SD.. He registered for the World War I Draft on 12 September 1918 while living at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA. The registration card gave additional information on him: "He gives his complete name and birth on 23 Nov 1885. He is unemployed and gives his father Frank E. and nearest relative.". He resided at Chicago, Cook County, IL, in 1928. He married Anne Marie Petek on 22 May 1942 at Chicago, Cook County, IL. Hugh Jerome Hotchkin died on 12 April 1960 at Santa Ana, Orange County, CA, USA, at age 74.3,4 He was buried at Fairhaven Memorial Park, at Santa Ana, Orange County, CA, USA.

     Hugh M. and Raymond Hotchkin supplied information on Hugh J. and said that this uncle was a bachelor school teacher who boarded with his sister Hanna Thomas after his retirement. The 1904 through the 1910 city directories show Hugh as a book binder, living with his parents and brother at 5145 S. Winchester. The 1928 Polk Directory of Chicago finds him living at 5829 Artesian, Chicago and says that he is employed at Tilden Technical High School. He moved to California, after retirement, lived with his sister and her husband and died in Santa Ana, Orange Co., CA. Hugh Miller Hotchkin calls him, "the scholar of the family".

     Catherine R. Metzger was born on 19 August 1865 at Germany. She was the daughter of Christian Metzger and Dorothea Marquadt. She married Jacob (Jack) Maurer at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, MI, USA, on 16 November 1884.1 She married Ernest Hotchkin at Saline, Washtenaw County, MI, USA, on 15 May 1908. Catherine R. Metzger lived in 1915 at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, MI. The 1915 Polk's Directory shows Katherine as the widow of Ernest living at 823 Berkshire Rd. She died on 1 March 1934 at Saline, Washtenaw County, MI, at age 68.2 She was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, at Saline, Washtenaw County, MI, USA.

     The 1910 census of Washtenaw Co., MI shows Katherine with her husband Ernest Hotchkin and one non-relative. She is buried next to her husband in Blk A-5 City Cemetery, Saline, MI. The cemetery records give her maiden surname. Her marriage to Ernest Hotchkin is recorded in Vol 8, pg 174, 1908 in Washtenaw Co., Mi. His name is listed as Hotchkiss. Her parents were Christian Metzgar and Doretha ?. She had been married once before to Maurer. Her death records show her birth as 19 August 1865, at age 67-8-19 and that she had resided at 901 Berkshire Rd., Pittsfield Twp., Washtenaw Co., MI for 50 years. She was buried in Saline. Her Will identified children as Louise Shumaker of Copemish, MI, age 48; Rudolph Mauer, of 901 Berkshire, Ann Arbor, age 46; and Oswald Maurer, of Port Orchard, WA, age 45.

George A. Wenzel

     George was born at OH, USA, on 20 May 1903. George is age 7 at the 1910 census and 16 at the 1920 census. At the 1930 census he is no longer with his parents.. He was the son of William G. Wenzel and Velma May Decker. George A. Wenzel married Elsie Augusta Kreger circa 1919 at OH. George A. Wenzel appeared on the census of 1930 at Toledo, Lucas County, OH, USA. The census lists the family as: George A. Wenzel, 26, married at age 24, born in OH, parents born in MI, street car conductor; wife Elsie A, 22, marriage at age 20, born in OH, parents born in Germany.. He died in 1961 at Charlotte, Eaton County, MI, USA. He was buried at South Center Eaton Cemetery, at Eaton County, MI, USA.

     George is found in the 1910 census of Washtenaw Co., MI with his parents, and the census says that he was born in Ohio. George's parentage is cleared up in the 1920 census where he is shown as a step son.

     Julia Mae and the Compiler have corresponded during the last few years. She is 87 years old and living in Jellico, Tennessee. The attached wedding announcement seems to be Julie but she never told me that she had remarried.

Robert Henry Hotchkin

     Robert Henry Hotchkin was born on 31 October 1851 at Sangerfield, Oneida County, NY, USA.1,2,3 He was the son of Mark Caldwell (M. C.) Hotchkin and Jennette M. Hovey.

He married Nellie Janette Filkins at NY, USA, on 25 June 1873. Married 26 years according to the 1900 census..4 Robert Henry Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1880 at Welaka, Putnam County, FL, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Robert, 29, NY, clerk in store; Nellie, 24, keep house, NY; Dana, 4, NY, at home. All are listed as boarders in home of William Benson, 29, a grocer.. He resided at St Joseph, Berrien County, MI, USA, in 1900. He was employed in 1915 at Tacoma, Pierce County, WA, USA, as a box factory worker. He died on 10 June 1934 at Tacoma, Pierce County, WA, at age 82.5,6 He was buried at Waterville Cemetery, at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA. The Death Certificates of both Robert and Nellie show that they were cremated in Tacoma, WA; yet their names appear on the mounument in the Eli Hotchkin plot of Waterville Cemetery.7

     At the 1880 census, the family was living in Putnam Co., Fl with William Benson. Benson was a Grocer and Robert worked in his store as a Clerk. At the 1900 Census, Robert H. says that they had three children with one living. The two children that died have not been identified. Robert's Death Certificate says that he died of a stroke and cerebral hemorrhage and Nellie died of old age and senility. Both were long-term residences of the Sands Hotel in Tacoma. Robert and Nellie were cremated at Mt View Cemetery, but the Compiler has found a gravestone for both in the Waterville NY cemetery, on the Eli Hotchkin plot.
     The information on Robert's Death Certificate was supplied by his widow Nellie and gave his birth, death and parents. It says that he was the owner of a box factory in Tacoma, which he had last worked at in 1920.Their son Dana was born while the family lived in Florida in 1876.

Married 26 years according to the 1900 census..2 Nellie Janette Filkins died on 28 October 1934 at Sands Hotel, Tacoma, Pierce County, WA, USA, at age 81.3 She was buried at Waterville Cemetery, at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA.4

     Nellie's death certificate gives her birth and death dates and her parents names. The information was supplied by her sister Mrs. Letitie Bean.

The census lists the family as: Florence Hotchkin, age 49 (1880), single, born in NY, parents born in NY, business is artifical flowers. There is no proof that this is the correct Florence..

     Florence is found in the 1900 census of Onondaga Co., DeWitt, Eastwood, NY living with her father Addison, with no one else in household.

Frank Marion Hotchkin

     Frank Marion Hotchkin was born on 9 February 1869 at Sangerfield, Oneida County, NY, USA.1 He was the son of George Putnam Hotchkin and Mariah Mann. Frank Marion Hotchkin was a Pri, andserved in the US Marines at the Portsmouth Navy Yard.2 He married Mary (Maggie) Margaret Griffith at Little Falls, Herkimer County, NY, USA, on 19 March 1892.3
     The Waterville Times says that he was elected as Collector and he received 266 votes out of 277 who voted.
Frank Marion Hotchkin was employed in 1895 as a Grocer. He and Mary (Maggie) Margaret Griffith were divorced before 1910. The 1910 census calls her May M. and says that she is divorced.. Frank Marion Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1910 at Boston, Suffolk County, MA, USA. The census lists the family as: Frank M. Hotchkin, 41, single, born NY, father birth not known, mother born England, works in shoemaker shop.. He married Bertha S. Sullivan on 27 December 1935 at Nashua, Hillsborough County, NH, USA.4 Frank Marion Hotchkin died on 5 June 1936 at Boston, Suffolk County, MA, USA, at age 67. Obituary.5 He was buried at Walnut Hills Cemetery, at Brookline, Norfolk County, MA, USA.

     Frank's birth date is given in his fathers Civil War Pension Application. His daughter in a letter to the Hotchkin Reunion Secretary says that he lived in Waterville, NY and later in Boston, MA. The 1900 census says that his father was born in NY and mother at sea and it gives his marriage date as 1892.
     He appears in the 1898 Chicago City Directory as F M Hotchkin and Co., Grocers at 6426 Stoney Island and residing at 5426 Monroe. The next available city directory is 1902 and it lists his wife Mrs Maggie M. as M & M Grocers at 6426 Jackson Park. She appears in the 1905 directory in the same manner, but in 1910 she is listed at 770 E 41st St as Meg M., widow of Frank. However, Frank appears in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses of MA.

     Clarence Edward (Clair) Breining was born on 2 January 1881 at MI, USA. World War I Draft Card says MI, his Marriage Certificate says TN.1 He was the son of John Martin Breining and Ellen Drayton. He married Una Belle I. Hotchkin at Jackson, Jackson County, MI, USA, on 18 December 1911. Clarence Edward (Clair) Breining registered for the World War I Draft on 12 September 1918 while living at Jackson County, MI, USA. The registration card gave additional information on him: "Clarence Edward Breining, born 2 jan 1881, works for Peerless Portland Cement Co, wife Una Belle Breining.". He appeared on the census of 1920 at Spring Arbor, Jackson County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: Clarence E. Breining, 38, born MI, father born Germany, mother born England; wife Unabelle, 23, born MI; dau LaReda E., 6, born MI; son Charles J., 4, born MI; son Lester, 1, born MI.. He died on 7 January 1955 at Washtenaw County, MI, USA, at age 74. Una Belle claims that she is a widow at the 1930 census..2 He was buried at Highland Park Cemetery, at Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, MI, USA.

     Information on this individual is from his marriage license to Una Belle Hotchkin. He reports that his parents were Martin Breining and Ellen Drayton and his occupation was trainman. They were married by Robert A. Smith, Judge of Probate Court and witnessed by Una Belle's mother Ella Bateman Hotchkin and Edith Hotchkin Fritz.
     The Jackson Co, Michigan Rural Directory 1918-23 lists the family as follows; C. E. Breining, spouse Una Belle, 2 children, occupation M. C. RR Agent, R1 Spring Arbor.
     The 1920 Census of Spring Arbor has him with his wife Una Belle, daughter La Reda, son Charles J, and son Lester.

William Miller Hotchkin

     William Miller Hotchkin was born on 3 April 1883 at Mitchell, Davison County, SD, USA. He was the son of Earnest Frank Hotchkin and Anna (Annie) Miller Mueller. He married Elfrieda Schick at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA, on 9 November 1907.1 William Miller Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1910 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Miller, age 26, b SD, f & m b IL; wife Elfreda, age 26, b IL, f & m b Ger; son Miller H., age 1 8/12, son Robert F., age 6/12; Miller was a bookbinder and owned his home free of mortage.. He resided at Chicago, Cook County, IL, in 1910. He died on 24 June 1917 at Avon, Lake County, IL, USA, at age 34.2

     William's son Hugh Miller Hotchkin furnished information on this family. He says that both his dad and he were known as Miller. The 1900 census of Chicago finds William M. with his parents and gives his birth as April 1884 and says that he is 16 and born in SD; and he is an apprentice Blacksmith. Son Hugh Miller said that his parents, both lived in the area of Cornell Park, Chicago and met at Robert Fulton Grade School.
     The 1910 census says that they had been married 3 years and that both of their parents were born in IL. Grandson Raymond Harry says that William Miller died of drowning in Chicago. Walter J. gives a date of during WWI, about 1917. William appears in the 1904 through the 1910 Chicago City Directories, as a book binder living at 5141 Winchester until 1910 when he resides at 5528 Oakley. Birth records of his son John have William listed as a Builder.

Charles P. Hotchkin

     Charles P. Hotchkin was born in 1836 at NY, USA.1 He was the son of Noah B. Hotchkin and Emeline L. Monroe. Charles P. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1855 at Paris Twp, Oneida County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: NY State Census, Paris, Oneida Co., NY, Pg 10; Hotchkin, Charles, Emaline, Sarah, Mary, Frances.. He married Maria Anne Chapman at NY circa 1866. He resided at Paris Twp, Oneida County, NY, in 1875. Charles P. Hotchkin died in 1890 at Paris Twp, Oneida County, NY.2 He was buried at Sauquoit Valley Cemetery, at Sauquoit, Oneida County, NY, USA.

     The 1850 and 1860 Census of Paris, Oneida Co., NY finds him living with the family of Charles and Harriet Monroe, born 1814 and 1810 respectively. He is still with the Monroe family at the 1870 Census but has a wife and child. His mother, Emeline, in her Will, leaves $300 to Mary M. in trust; for the care of her oldest son, Charles P. This Will was dated 26 April 1890; a codicil to the Will, dated 8 July 1891 says that Charles is now dead.

     Harriet Kirk Patrick Hotchkin was born on 14 April 1838 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, USA. 1900 census give Apr 1838.1 She was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Hotchkin and Jane M. Little. She married James Lansing Cady at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, in 1872. First Presbyterian Church Records 1803- 1896, married by Rev J J Porter.. She resided at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA, in 1874. Harriet Kirk Patrick Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1910 at Augusta, Oneida County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Harriet H. Cady, boarder, 72, widow,married 37 years, no children, born NY, parents born NY.. She died on 12 January 1916 at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, at age 77.2 She was buried at Waterville Cemetery, at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA.

     Harriet is living with her brother John L. in Chicago according to the 1898 Chicago City Directory. This is the only directory in which she appears. She is called Mrs J. L. Cady in her mother's obituary of Waterville Times, Vol 4, pg 101.
