Birth date given is 24 Oct 1885 Independence, KS.1,2 He was a Commander, andserved in US Navy, during the WWI and WWII. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1908 and spent 2 years in the fleet and then was commissioned as an Ensign. He served in WWI in the North Sea aboard a minesweeper and was awarded the Navy Cross. He spent 30 years in the Navy and retired in 1938 as a Commander. He was recalled in WWII and served the duration of the war becoming a Commodore and retired at the end of the war at a permanent rank of Captain. He appeared on the census of 1910 at USS Minnesota, US Navy, Military and Naval Forces, USA. The census lists the family as: Charles M. James, 24, single, born KS, father born VT, mother born IL.. He married Beatrice Collins, daughter of Harry John Collins and Jeanette (Netty) Matilda Hotchkin, on 24 April 1913 at Kiitsap County, WA, USA.3 Charles Milford James died on 11 July 1980 at Seattle, King County, WA, USA, at age 94.1,2 He was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, at Seattle, King County, WA, USA.

Garfield Bevins
Mr. Garfield C. Bevins, 86, of Fountainview Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in LaPorte, died Sunday, June 25, 1995, at LaPorte Hospital.
He was born Feb. 20, 1909, in Hilton, Va., to Elmer and Fannie (Curtis) Bevins, and had lived in LaPorte for three years coming from Dunedin, Florida where he had lived for 18 years.
Mr. Bevins was a member of North Dunedin Baptist church in Dunedin and had retired as a custodian at Crown Point School Corp., Crown Point, Ind.
On March 1, 1931, in Kingsport, Tenn., he married Retha Fields, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Lois Endirs of Corydon, Ind., and Darlene Endris of Cedar Lake, Ind; three sons, Jim of LaPorte, Ernest of Clearwater, Fla., and Gene of Cedar Lake; 15 grandchildren; one step grandchild; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one sister, Gertrude Morgan of Florida, and two brothers Haston of Tennessee, and Buford of Florida. He was preceded in death by one son, Dwight David; his parents; one sister, Leafie, and one brother Raymond.
The service and burial were Wednesday at Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Schereville, with the Rev. Earl Hosea officiating.
Eller-Brady Funeral Home of Cedar Lake was in charge of the arrangements.. He was buried at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, at Schererville, Lake County, IN, USA.

     Garfield Cavada Bevins was born on February 20, 1909 in Hilton, Virginia. His parents were James Elmer and Fannie Elizabeth Curtis Bevins. Garfield was the third of seven children. He had two sisters, Leafie Dell and Laura Gertude, and three bothers, Raymond Elmer, George Haston Curtis, and Beauford Carl. Garfield's father had several different jobs: farming, building construction, and asphalt roofing, and he retired from the Penn-Dixie Cement plant in Kingsport, Tennessee.
Garfield C. Bevins is shown enumerated in the family of Elmer and Fannie E. Bevins in the 1910 taken as of April 15 for Scott County, Virginia as being 1 year and 2 months of age.
Garfield C. Bevins is shown enumerated in the family of Elmer and Fannie E. Bevins in the 1920 census as of January 1, 100 Douglas Avenue, Athens, McMinn County, Tennessee as being 9 years of age.
Retha and Garfield Bevins were married for 64 years when Garfield died of a heart attack. He died at the hospital in LaPorte Indiana at the age of 86. They lived in many different places. He lived in Hilton Virginia from 1913 to 1917 - In Louden County Tennessee from 1917 - 1920 - in Kingsport, Tennessee from 1920 - 1922 - Gibson Town Tennessee from 1922 - Bottom of Cement Hill in Kingsport Tennessee from 1922 - 1926 - moved to the top of Cement Hill 1926 - 1931 - Garfield mother and Father lived at 348 May Street Kingsport Tennessee 1932 - 1970. Garfield attended grade school in Hilton, VA 1915-1917. He then went to Jackson School in Kingsport, TN from 1917-1923 then went to Dobyns-Bennett High School, 1923-1925, also in Kingsport. Garfield then worked with his Uncle Charles on bridges and water tanks, 2 years in Indiana, and a pipe fitting and tin chop in Elgin, Illinois. He then went to work at the Kingsport Press as a book binder 1931-1947. He then moved his family to Cedar Lake and started working at Rand McNally in Hammond, Indiana, 1947-1959. He then worked for Helix Corp. in Crown Point, Indiana. as a machinist. He then started working for the Crown Point School Corp. as a custodial engineer from 1959-1975 when he retired. He and Retha moved to Dunedin, Florida.

The very first time I saw Garfield and his lovely devoted wife Retha was one December 17, 1934 when they came to my house in Mansville, Virginia, a small community in southwest Virginia. The occasion was the death of my father, John M. Bellamy. I was 19 years old, and on May 5, 1935 I was hired as a bookbinder at Kingsport Press in Kingsport, Tennessee where I worked just across the aisle from Garfield who was also an employee. these events were the beginning of a long relationship with Garfield and his family. I left the press on September 25, 1945 and went to work at Rand-McNally in Hammond, Indiana and on one of my visits back to Kingsport, I was going on the outskirts of Louisville, Kentucky when I saw Garfield and his brother Raymond who were ridding motorbikes. I recognized Garfield and I stopped and talked to Garfield. I told him where I worked and the address, and two weeks later I received a letter from Garfield wanting to know if I cold get him a job. I talked to my supervisor, he agreed to give him a job, he moved his family to Meyer Manor in Cedar Lake ad our families have enjoyed many fellowships together.
