Hotchkin and Starr also owned a Book and Stationary store in the town of LeRoy. A book called, Our Country and its People, Oneida Co., NY, gives him as the publisher of the Elucidator Organ, for the AntiMasonic Party starting 7 August 1829 in Utica, NY. Augustine Hall Hotchkin

M, (1 November 1810 - 30 November 1896)
Augustine Hall Hotchkin
Augustine Hall Hotchkin was born on 1 November 1810 at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, USA. Died at age 86-0-29.1 He was the son of James Hervey Hotchkin Rev. and Rebecca Hall. He married Sarah Aulls at Wheeler, Steuben County, NY, USA, on 20 September 1833. Augustine Hall Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1840 at Lodi, Washtenaw County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: A. H. Hotchkin, 1 male under 5, 1 male 20 to 30; 1 female under 5, 1 female 20 to 30.. He died on 30 November 1896 at Saline, Washtenaw County, MI, USA, at age 86.2 He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, at Saline, Washtenaw County, MI, USA.

Augustine is listed in NEHGH, Vol 85 and his marriage to Mary Aulls is listed in, 10,000 Facts of Western NY; and he is mentioned in the, Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine," Quarterly. It says that he came to Washtenaw Co., MI prior to 1840; and the family lived in Lodi, Michigan at the 1845 Michigan Census.
His death date is found in Washtenaw Co., MI records saying that he died of old age at age 86-0-29 which coincides with his known birth date. Records further say that he was retired, born in NY and that his parents were James Harvey and Rebecca both of NY and that he was a widower and a resident of Saline. He lived in Saline and York Twp. according to Family History Capers. His gravestone is found in the Oakwood Cemetery beside US12; in Section A-31, Lots A 7F. According to Family History Capers, Vol 8, #3, he was a Justice of the Peace in York and an Elder in the Presbyterian Church in Lodi, MI. Records of the Presbyterian Church, Saline, MI show that he was admitted by Letter on 10 August 1839 as a transfer from Wheeler, NY. He was dismissed from the Saline church on 27 December 1857. It is possible that his minister father James Hervey was in Washtenaw Co. because records of the Presbyterian Church lists a Mr. Hotchkin as visitor or moderator on 5 August 1849.
He is mentioned many times in tjhe History of Washtenaw County as one of the Michigan Pioneers.3,4,5

Samuel Hotchkin Esq.1

M, (4 May 1818 - 12 February 1895)
Samuel Hotchkin Esq. was born on 4 May 1818 at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, USA. Passport Application. He was the son of James Hervey Hotchkin Rev. and Rebecca Hall. He married Margaret Canfield Doremus at New York City, New York County, NY, USA, on 8 July 1840. Married by Rev. A. B. Eddy.2,3
     (an unknown value.)4
Samuel Hotchkin Esq. appeared on the census of 1850 at Pomfret, Chautauqua County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Samuel, 31, b NY, lawyer, wife Saphrona, 31, dau Catherine, 6, living in family of Charles F. Matteson, 35. Not sure if this is the same Samuel.. He married Mary C. Gray at Elmira, Chemung County, NY, USA, circa 1857.5 He resided at Elmira, Chemung County, NY, in 1885. Samuel Hotchkin Esq. died on 12 February 1895 at Elmira, Chemung County, NY, at age 76.6,7 He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, at Elmira, Chemung County, NY, USA.

Samuel ran a prosperous business in Elmira, NY. The Prattsburg News reports him visiting his father, Rev James H. in 1885. Fredrick A. Canfield in his book on the The Canfield Families mistakenly describes Samuel as the son of Rev Beriah Hotchkin. He married Margaret Doremus of Elmira, NY in NYC. At the time of his father's death he lived in Fredonia, NY and the local newpaper referred to him as Esq. in reporting his father's death.
The 1850 census has a Samuel Hotchkin living in Pomfrey with a wife Saphrona and a daughter Catherine. This Samuel is a lawyer and the birth dates for the wife and daughter match those of wife Margaret and daughter Caroline, so it is believed that these are the same people.
According to a publication called Elmira Historical Pageant, Samuel built a dam across the Cheumg River in 1828 and erected a flour mill at the site.
Later he ran an unsuccessful business in NY City as Baldwin & Hotchkin.6

Joseph Beriah Hotchkin

M, (15 May 1814 - 24 January 1900)
Joseph Beriah Hotchkin was born on 15 May 1814 at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, USA. He was the son of Beriah Hotchkin Jr. and Lucretia Watrous Daniels. He married Desiah Dunning at Urbana, Steuben County, NY, USA, on 3 April 1844. Married by Rev James Hervey Hotchkin.. Joseph Beriah Hotchkin was registered for Civil War Draft on on 1 July 1863 at 27th Congressional District, Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, USA. Age 42, farmer, born NY.1 He appeared on the census of 1870 at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY. Conflicting evidence states that he died at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, on 24 January 1900.2 He was buried at Prattsburgh Pioneer Cemetery, at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, USA.

According to his obituary in the Prattsburg News, Joseph died on the farm where he was born. This farm originally was purchased by Rev. Beriah and his son, Beriah Jr lived there until he died. Lucretia sold it to James Hotchkin Jr in 1866 but Joseph lived there all his life. It was on this farm that six of Joseph and Desiah's children died of "black diphtheria" in 1864. The children were buried on the farm and a maple tree planted over their graves. There being no money for gravestone, Desiah wrote epitaphs for each child on small gilt-edged cards. These cards are now faded but still readable. A grandchild went to the graves every year with her father to place flowers and hear the story again. After that grandchild moved away from Prattsburg, she realized that in the future no one would know about the childrens graves so she had a stone craved, "the Children of Joseph Beriah and Desiah Dunning Hotchkin-1864". She had quite a time convincing the stone worker that she wanted 1864 on the stone and not 1964. The maple tree died in 1986. Joseph and Desiah are both buried in the Prattsburg Rural Cemetery.
