George Delorane Parker

M, (28 January 1814 - 28 August 1847)
George Delorane Parker was born on 28 January 1814 at Republic of Texas, USA. He married Sarah Aurelia Miller at Harris County, TX, USA, on 10 November 1841. George Delorane Parker died on 28 August 1847 at Harris County, TX, at age 33. George was killed by horse thieves who were tried for murder and acquited..

The children of George and Sarah are found in the 1850 census of Connecticut. Frances and her half brother John W. Jr. are living in Derby, New Haven County, Ct with Lyman Smith, age 60 and wife Jemima, age 50 and Sarah Parker is living in the home of Abraham D. Lee, age 29, his wife Sarah H., age 28 and William H. Cox, age 21, his wife Esther, age 20, in Bridgeport, Fairfield, CT
[: TAB:]William Hathaway in answering the Compilers request for confirmation of George’s death date gave the following information. " Yes, these are the correct dates. George D. Parker was killed by a horse thief in Washington Co. Texas - I have a photocopy of a letter from a family friend reporting on the trial (the jury failed to convict the accused, even though his own lawyer thought he was guilty) and we have copies of the Rutland VT newspaper which lists George's death date, that of his mother Eunice in Sep 1847 and George's sister Naomi in Dec 1847. George left a widow, Sarah Aurelia Miller - (Mrs. Geo. Parker), barely pregnant at age 24. Sarah's mother (Aurelia Shields Hotchkiss - Mrs. Christopher Miller), father (Christopher Miller) and two brothers all died within a few weeks of one another in 1839 of Yellow Fever and her first husband (John Eldredge) died a few months later in 1840 (also Yellow Fever), leaving her with a baby son just short of her 17th birthday. (Aurelia Shields Hotchkiss of course is my connection to the Hotchkiss/Hodgkin/Hotchkin family.) After her second widowhood and with few resources, Sarah returned to her native Connecticut with son John (from first husband), and three daughters from second husband, George Parker, including young Frances Parker, born 8 months and 11 days after her father died. Sarah then died in Conn. soon thereafter in 1849, not having quite reached her 26th birthday. Frances was raised by other family friends (as were her siblings), went on to marry my Great-Grandfather (Keyes Allen Hathaway) and together they had seven children - their first died before her 4th birthday; their second was born and died a couple years later; their third born four days after their second died (and he then died at age 21 months); my grandfather was born a couple years later (and survived); another daughter born and reached age 61; then two others died in infancy. These two women (Sarah and Frances) went through some tough times - we have some letters Sarah wrote home asking for help in her times of distress.
The daughter who reached age 61 (Pauline Parker - Mrs. Charles Grant King Jr.) was the woman who expended much effort in the 1920s, in compiling her ancestry, attempting to prove her DAR (and Mayflower) lines. She was responsible for me having so much information from this branch of my paternal line. It is left to me to gather the certified copies of Vital Records to meet the standards for these societies. I don't think I've had time to mention that a first cousin assembled the certified VRs for the parallel branch, through the paternal Hathaway line (husband of Frances), up to a Robert Hathaway (1763-1852) who served in the American Revolution. Just this past Veterans Day (11 Nov 2007), the SAR held a formal grave marking ceremony, placing the bronze marker at his gravesite in Warren, MA. I was not able to attend, but a few dozen other relatives from the area did participate and I was given photos of the event. There are eleven other Patriots on my paternal line and at least two on my maternal line - one day I hope to fill them all in with all the reliable primary sources."
