Peter Thatcher III, Rev.

M, (14 January 1714/15 - 12 September 1785)
Peter Thatcher III, Rev. was born on 14 January 1714/15 at Milton, Norfolk County, MA, USA. The 11 day difference between Peter's recorded date of birth at Middleborough, Mass. (Jan. 14th) and his stated date of birth on his gravestone (Jan. 25th) is the result of Peter's family misunderstanding the result of England's conversion from the Julian to modern Gregorian calendar in 1752. The 11 day difference between the Julian and Gregorian calenders was corrected on a one-time only basis by the day following Sept. 3, 1752 being Sept. 14, 1752. It did not require any other adjustment to a prior or future date in the English calendar.
Frm findagrave.com. He married Bethiah Carpenter at Attleboro, Bristol County, MA, USA, on 30 October 1749. Lillian DuLaney gives a marriage date of 31 Nov 1749.. On the 13th inft. died at Attleborough, in the 70th year of his age, the Rev. Mr. PETER THACHER, paftor of the fecond church in that town. En[dowed] by the great author of nature with refpectable abilities, he early devoted them to the fervice of God in the miniftry: In this employment he placed his higheft fatisfaction, and while he difcharged its duties with ftrict punctuality and temperate zeal, he acquired the efteem and refpect of all who were acquainted with his character. Strongly attached to the peculiar doctines of the gofpel, he held them up in the cleareft and moft explicit terms; but he never fuffered this attachement to prejudice his mind, or embitter his conduct towards thofe who differed from him. His warm and exemplary piety evidenced that the religion which he preached to others, had made a real impreffion upon his own heart; and his inflexible integrity compelled the refpect of his enemies, while his warm benevolence, and open, hofpitable temper, conciliated the affection of his frends. Under long and distreffing informities, which for two years paft, have prevented his attendance upon the public duties of his profeffion, he exercifed the greateft patience and refignation, and died as he lived, in the firm faith of the gofpel, and a joyful hope of its future and eternal rewards.

Rev. Peter Thacher, 3rd child and eldest s. of Rev. Peter Thacher, Jr. and Mary Prince, b. of record Jan. 14, 1715/6 (g.s., Jan. 25) at Middleborough, Mass. He d. Sept. 13, 1785 at Attleborough, Mass., Æ 70. He was the longstanding pastor of the 2nd Congregational Church of Christ at Attleborough.. He was buried at Old Kirk Yard Cemetery, at Attleboro, Bristol County, MA, USA.

Rev Peter Thatcher or Thacher served in the Revolutionary War as Chaplain of Col John Dagget's Regt, enlisted 4 Feb, 1778 and discharged 1 April 1778. He was stationed in Rhode Island for 3 months starting on 1 January 1778. His roll was approved at Providence, RI and also at Liverton by Brig Gen Esek Cornell who states that service was performed in his Brigade. Birth records of all the children came from Attleborough, MA Vital Records, pg 258-9 and Attleborough 2nd Church Records, pg 11. The family is described in, "The Thacher Family of Hartford, PA."

Rev. Tyler Thatcher, picture found at the Goodland School/

The foregoing referencing the "Discussion" between Dr. Charles Knowlton (1800-1850) of Ashfield, Mass., writer of the obituary, and the Rev. Tyler Thatcher, of Hawley, and Origen Bachelor sheds additional light on the following often recounted interchange between Hezekiah Warriner and Rev. Thatcher, which interchange finds its most recent publication in the History of Hawley, Mass., compiled by Louise Hale Johnson, pub. 1953, pgs 12-13: Rev. Tyler Thatcher, born in Princeton, Mass., in 1801, graduated Brown University, 1824, was installed in East Hawley in 1834 as a colleague of Rev. Jonathan Grout in the First Congregational Church. Rev. Grout died the following year and Rev. Thatcher continued as the settled pastor until January 31, 1843 [coincidently the same month in which the death of Hezekiah Warriner occurred]. By 1850 Rev. Thatcher left the East coast for California where he preached the reminder of his life. He died there December 4, 1869. He [Rev. Thatcher] had a strong, logical mind, and was a great reasoner. Among his hearers was Hezekiah Warriner, who was somewhat skeptical, and many were the discussions they had on points wherein they differed, and many were the sermons with special reference to Mr. Warriner, Still Mr. Warriner paid liberally for the minister, at which some expressed surprise, "But" he said, "it was no more than fair, for he had more than his share of the preaching!".
He Sailed from Boston Nov 1850, arrived by Cape Horn at San Francisco Sep 1851. Detained 1 mos on the way at Rio de Janeiro, located at Marysville and preached at different points. Installed 6 Dec 1866 Pastor of the Cong'l Church at Cache Creek.
