Gerald Cecil Brand died on 18 October 1944 at Peleliu, Palau Islands, at age 28. The battle of Peleliu covered the period of September 15 to November 27 1944. This battle of one of MacArthur's great mistakes of the war. The taking of the Island was estimated for 2 weeks but it took nearly 3 months and was the greatest percentage loss of American troops of the war. The large percent of these losses were US Marines..

Hiram Maxson Brand was born, according to conflicting information, on 11 September 1890 at Brown Twp, Paulding County, OH, USA. Date and location according to his WWI Draft Registration.. He was born on 4 September 1894 at OH, USA. Age 39 at the 1930 census.1 He married Inez Laverne Leatherman at OH in 1914. He was age 23, she age 18 according to 1930 census.. Hiram Maxson Brand registered for the World War I Draft on 11 September 1918 while living at Washtenaw County, MI, USA. The registration card gave additional information on him: "Draft Registration gives his complete name and birth date. He says that he was born in Brown Twp, OH on 11 sep 1890. He claims a wife and 2 children as dependents and says that he is blind in one eye.". He appeared on the census of 1920 at Summit, Jackson County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: Hiram M. Brand, 28, carpenter for railroad, born OH; wife Inez S, 24, born OH; Arlos R., 5, born OH; Gerald C., 4 2/12, born OH; dau Grace G., 2 7/12, born MI.. He appeared on the census of 1930 at Summit, Jackson County, MI. The census lists the family as: Hiram M. Brand, 39, married at 23, born OH, parents born OH, die setter at radio factory; wif Inez, 34, married at 18, born OH, parents born OH; son Richard A., 15, born OH; son Gerala, 14, born OH.. He died in February 1977 at Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN, USA, at age 82.2
