She died on 10 May 2009 at Marquette, Marquette County, MI, USA, at age 86. OBITUARY

Avonelle S. Hotchkin

MARQUETTE – Avonelle S. Hotchkin, 86, of Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday morning, May 10, 2009, at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Avonelle was born February 24, 1923, in Flint, a daughter of Gael V. and Olive (Jahraus) Simpson. She was raised in Battle Creek, attended the Battle Creek Public Schools, and graduated there. Avonelle then moved to California where she enrolled in drafting courses, attending the University of California Engineering, Science, and Management War Training program, graduating in 1944. She also resided for a time in Seattle, Washington, where she worked on the project that developed the wing of the B-52 bomber at Boeing Aircraft. Returning to Michigan, she met her future husband, Hugh Miller Hotchkin, Sr. Following their marriage, the couple resided in Jackson where they established their home and raised a family. While in Jackson, Avonelle was involved as a Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and worked in retail sales at several stores. In 1970, Hugh’s job took him to Puerto Rico and the couple resided there until 1978 when they retired to Sarasota, Florida. Avonelle was an accomplished cellist and pianist and, over the years, had taken art courses from many different artists. She was a talented pastel, oil, charcoal, and watercolor artist, as well as, having worked at casting bronze busts. In Sarasota, she had several of her artistic works exhibited in juried shows, volunteered at the Sarasota Art Gallery, and served as a docent for the Sarasota Art Association. Avonelle led a varied and busy life, and sometimes choices had to be made where her talents were concerned. Yielding to her artistic aspirations, she, at one point, turned down an opportunity to play the cello in the Chicago Symphony. In 1994, her husband, Hugh, preceded her in death and in 2005, Avonelle moved to Marquette.
Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia A. Yackel of Marquette; three sons, Hugh Miller (Deanna) Hotchkin Jr of Ionia, William Simpson (Dibet) Hotchkin of Greenville, SC, and Stephen Bryant (Nita) Hotchkin of Cantooket, NH; her grandchildren, John, Matthew, Jason, Mark, Greg, Trevor, Stephanie, and Kyle; great-grandchildren, Macey, Madison, Molly, McKenna, Ella Grace, Will, Matt, and a soon-to-be expected great-grandchild; and a brother, Hugh A. Simpson. In addition to her parents and husband, Avonelle was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew “Andy” Yackel in 2007.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 13, beginning at 5:00 pm. Funeral services will follow at 6:30 pm Wednesday evening in the funeral home with Avonelle’s son, William, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Smile Train (www.smiletrain.org)..2

Augustus (Gus) Asbury Skinner was born on 26 March 1835 at Morgan County, GA, USA. He married Mary (Mollie) Elizabeth Edwards at Cass County, GA, USA, on 7 January 1858.1 Augustus (Gus) Asbury Skinner appeared on the census of 1870 at Cartersville, Bartow County, GA, USA. The census lists the family as: August Skinner, 32, born GA, retired (can't read what); wife Mary E., 27, born GA; son William A., 8, born GA; son John Y. ?, 4, born GA; daughter Mary M., 1, born GA; Sarah A. E. Edwards, 52, born GA; Sarah M. Edwards, 24, born GA.. He died on 30 April 1881 at Cartersville, Bartow County, GA, at age 46. Death of Mr. A. A. Skinner.

We regret to announce in this issue of The Express the death of Mr. A. A. Skinner, which event occurred at his residence last Saturday evening at 6 o'clock, after an illness of several months. The deceased was too well known in this community for us to say anything that would add to his memory, as he became a resident of this place in 1854, when it was but a small village, and has been identified with its business interests for a quarter of a century. He was born in Morgan county March 26th, 1834, and was therefore but a little over 47 years old, and has been a leading member of this church ever since the war and was a steward at the time of his death. He leaves four children, three boys and a girl, besides other relatives, to mourn his loss, his wife having preceded him some 6 or 7 years. As a business man he was known as strict, honest and attentive; as a friend, one who could be relied on in any emergency; as a neighbor, kind and obliging; as a father and husband, devoted to the interests of his loved ones; and he was as strict in religious matters as in secular. Truly, it may be said of him that "whatsoever his hands found to do, he did it with his might." He will be missed in the business, social and religious world. His remains were interred in Oak Hill cemetery at 5 o'clock, p.m., Sunday, services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. J. Jarrell, assisted by Rev. Theo E. Smith, of the Presbyterian church, and were followed by a large concourse of people as was ever assembled in Cartersville on any similar occasion. Peace to his ashes.. He was buried at Oak Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, at White, Bartow County, GA, USA.
