Avonelle Simpson Hotchkin
Avonelle S. Hotchkin
MARQUETTE – Avonelle S. Hotchkin, 86, of Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday morning, May 10, 2009, at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Avonelle was born February 24, 1923, in Flint, a daughter of Gael V. and Olive (Jahraus) Simpson. She was raised in Battle Creek, attended the Battle Creek Public Schools, and graduated there. Avonelle then moved to California where she enrolled in drafting courses, attending the University of California Engineering, Science, and Management War Training program, graduating in 1944. She also resided for a time in Seattle, Washington, where she worked on the project that developed the wing of the B-52 bomber at Boeing Aircraft. Returning to Michigan, she met her future husband, Hugh Miller Hotchkin, Sr. Following their marriage, the couple resided in Jackson where they established their home and raised a family. While in Jackson, Avonelle was involved as a Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and worked in retail sales at several stores. In 1970, Hugh’s job took him to Puerto Rico and the couple resided there until 1978 when they retired to Sarasota, Florida. Avonelle was an accomplished cellist and pianist and, over the years, had taken art courses from many different artists. She was a talented pastel, oil, charcoal, and watercolor artist, as well as, having worked at casting bronze busts. In Sarasota, she had several of her artistic works exhibited in juried shows, volunteered at the Sarasota Art Gallery, and served as a docent for the Sarasota Art Association. Avonelle led a varied and busy life, and sometimes choices had to be made where her talents were concerned. Yielding to her artistic aspirations, she, at one point, turned down an opportunity to play the cello in the Chicago Symphony. In 1994, her husband, Hugh, preceded her in death and in 2005, Avonelle moved to Marquette.
Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia A. Yackel of Marquette; three sons, Hugh Miller (Deanna) Hotchkin Jr of Ionia, William Simpson (Dibet) Hotchkin of Greenville, SC, and Stephen Bryant (Nita) Hotchkin of Cantooket, NH; her grandchildren, John, Matthew, Jason, Mark, Greg, Trevor, Stephanie, and Kyle; great-grandchildren, Macey, Madison, Molly, McKenna, Ella Grace, Will, Matt, and a soon-to-be expected great-grandchild; and a brother, Hugh A. Simpson. In addition to her parents and husband, Avonelle was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew “Andy” Yackel in 2007.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 13, beginning at 5:00 pm. Funeral services will follow at 6:30 pm Wednesday evening in the funeral home with Avonelle’s son, William, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Smile Train (www.smiletrain.org)..2
