     William Wesley Hotchkin was born on 10 September 1930 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, USA.^1,2,3 He was the son of Harold Heman Hotchkin Sr. and Lyda R. Hemsworth. He married Nicola A. Walcker at Vancouver, Clark County, WA, USA, on 5 September 1964.^4,3 He resided at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, in 1993. William Wesley Hotchkin died on 26 March 1997 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, at age 66.^5,6

     William answered a letter from the Compiler and supplied a lot of dates for his family, son and grandson; he also filled in a bit of missing information on his sister. William worked for Crosetti Bros. along with his brothers Harold and Robert. He was also a millman at a door manufacturing company and a fireman on the UP Railroad.

     The 1850 census of Ann Arbor has him listed as Stephen W. The Polk Directory of 1868, Ann Arbor, MI shows him living with Thomas Hotchkin at the NE end of Broadway Rd., Ann Arbor. In later editions this address was called 129 Broadway. Both men are carpenters. The next available edition is 1872 and he no longer appears. In the 1895 Directory of Chicago, IL, he is in the novelties business as (Hotchkin and Smith), (Wright S. Hotchkin and Wellington D. Smith), the business was operated at 1226 Newport Ave., Chicago, IL and the Hotchkin family lived at 1438 Noble Street. The Will probate file of Thomas H. Hotchkin has a letter, dated 21 November 1904, signed W. S. Hotchkin in Temple, TX and saying that he is a son of Thomas H. and should be considered in the Will. He has died by the 1910 Census and his widow, Margaret is living in Flint, Michigan as a boarder. At the 1915 directory of Flint, she is listed as Margaret Hotchkin (wd Wright S.), boarding at 821 Lyon.⁴

     The family moved from Connecticut to Dutchess Co., NY and then to Liberty about 1825. At the New York State census of 1855, he and his wife Catherine had lived in Liberty for 29 years. Her place of birth was given as Dutchess Co., NY and his as CT. His family had moved from CT to NY shortly after his birth in 1812 and then from Amenia, NY to Liberty about 1825. In 1886 he moved to Kansas but returned to Liberty in a year or two. This trip was reported as testimony at his brother Francis' Will probate hearing. After the return from Kansas, the family moved to Rockland, NY. He died 1 August 1890 and his Will was probated 2 February 1891. His third wife, Hanna Jane was named as executrix of the Will, dated 16 May 1888, Patterson, NJ. The Will named his wife, Hanna Jane, his son Frank, and his grandson Walter Hotchkin of Rockland.

     Aurelia and her sons Jeremiah and Charles all died within one week due to Yellow Fever, while they were residing in Texas during 1839.

     Charles was the grandson of Ambrose who changed his name from Hotchkin to Hotchkiss. His memoirs are published in NEHGR, including data on his ancestors. He was a graduate of Trinity College, 1882, and received an MA there in 1886 after which he was awarded an LLB from Columbia in 1888 and became a member of the New York Bar in June 1888. He began his practice in New York City with the firm of Davies, Auerbach, Cornell and Hardy and stayed with this firm until he retired 31 December 1936. His wife Edith and daughter Elizabeth survived him. In 1922, Charles wrote a letter to the Hotchkiss Family Association defining the descendants of Ambrose Hodgkin.^5,6
