     Roselle George Hotchkin was born on 23 July 1859 at Albion, Orleans County, NY, USA.¹ He was the son of George W. Hotchkin and Elizabeth Warner. Roselle George Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1880 at Albion, Orleans County, NY. The census lists the family as: This census lists George W. as head of the household, age 63, a Truss Maker; wife Elizabeth W., age 58; son Roselle G., age 20 a Truss Maker; and two hired laborers who are Truss Makers.. He married Lena A. Unknown at Holley, Orleans County, NY, USA, on 26 May 1887.² Roselle George Hotchkin and Lena A. Unknown were divorced in June 1892 at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA.³ Roselle George Hotchkin died on 17 June 1910 at Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY, USA, at age 50. He committed sucide by jumping into the Niagra River and going over the American Falls..^4,5,6

     George was deeded his fathers property in Albion at the time of his mothers death, under the conditions that his father could occupy it and have all its benefits until his death. This property was located at 58 East State St., which is no longer standing and seems to be adjacent to the courthouse. This deed described George as a Commercial Traveler and his father’s obituary called him a perfume salesman. It also said that George was unmarried, which likely means that he wasn't married at that time as he was married on 26 May, 1887 at Holley, Orleans Co., NY under the name of Roselle G. Hotchkin. His wife's name appears in divorce documents as Lena A.
     He is listed in the Rochester City Directory starting in 1889-90 as R. G. Hotchkin, a salesman, with offices at 125 W. Main St. and a house at 173 Pearl; at the 1896 directory, he is Roselle G., a salesman with offices at 202 Court and boarding at 104 Chestnut; in 1901 his residence changes to the New Osburn House; in 1902 he moved to the Eggleston Hotel where he lived until 1909 when he is called a Manager with offices at 278 Main St and boards at 230 Chestnut; in 1910 his offices are at the 603 Livingston Bldg and still boarding at 230 Chestnut. His death is announced in the 1911-12 directory.
     An article in the Post Express, Rochester, NY, and dated 1 November 1898 says that R. G. Hotchkin, a Commercial Traveler, attempted suicide at the Butchel Hotel in Akron, OH. He had cut the artery of his left wrist and was found some time later, nearly dead. The article said that he was recovering well. He continues to appear in the Rochester City Directory as Roselle G. until the 1911-12 edition when it is noted that he has died.⁷

The W for marital status is unusual, nomally Wd is used for widow and it is not believed that Rovina was ever married.. She appeared on the census of 1930 at Grant Park, Kankakee County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: Rovena Hotchkin, owns home, $2500, age 74 (1855), born NY, parents born NY, living by herself, no occupation..

     She is called Lavina in the 1860 census with her father and Rovina in the 1900 and 1920 censuses.

     Roy Edward Hotchkin is the son of Walter James Hotchkin Jr. and Vonna Mae Baylis. Roy Edward Hotchkin married Ramona J. Unknown at MD, USA.

     Roy Peter Hotchkin was born on 1 November 1921 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA.¹ He was the son of John Francis (Jack) Hotchkin and Marie A. Schmidt. He married Eilene (LY) D.      Rozella was born at MI, USA, in 1839. She was the daughter of Abram Eli Hotchkin Sr. and Electa Smith. She married Joseph (Joel) H. Culver at Belvidere, Boone County, IL, USA, on 31 October 1858. Her marriage to Culver is given in Hotchkin Family Reunion Notes, no first name given. Marriage Certificate found in Boone Co. of marriage of Joe H. Culver to Rosa J. Hotchkin, 31 Oct, 1858. The Illinois Marriage Index 1763-1900 calls him Joel H.Culver..¹ Rozella (Rosa) A. Hotchkin died in 1863. This death date comes from Landmarks of Niagara County, New York and is not at all certain as a number of their facts are inaccurate..²

     We know that Rozella was with the family in Boone Co., IL because the Compiler has a copy of her marriage license to Joe Culver. This license refers to her as Rosa J. Hotchkin.

     Both Talcott and NEHGH describe Sally, and Talcott gives her marriage to Orin Jones. The 1850 census of Athens, PA gives a birth date of 1796 and church records show that she was baptized at the North Madison Congregational Church on 13 November 1796. At the 1850 census of Athens, PA she is listed as a farmer with her children Augustus, George and Catherine living with her. There is no husband or father in the family at this date. According to this census Augustus and George were born in Connecticut and Catherine in Pennsylvania. The Connecticut births are likely wrong as Caledonia, NY church records show her husband Orrin. Using the birth dates, her move to Pennsylvania would have been between 1835 and 1842.
     Both Sally Jones and Orin D. Jones are listed as members in records of the Belcoda Baptist Church where her parents were also members.

Stanley Harris furnished the connection to Hubbard from his grandmother's notes. She says that daughter Melissa married Mr. Phillips of Toledo, Oh and that they had sons George and Frank and daughter Cora.

     Samuel married the niece of Hon William H. Seward and they settled in Kansas. In Samuel's Civil War Pension file, he says that he lived in several counties of New York, in Ohio and came to Kansas in 1882, and to Cowley County, Kansas in 1885. By these same records, we know that he was in Ohio in 1873 when his son Edwin was born and back in New York when his next two children were born. Samuel enlisted in the Civil War on 22 April 1861 at Bath, NY and was assigned as a Pvt in Co. A, 23rd NY Infantry Volunteers. He was wounded at the battle of Sharpsburg Md., in the left leg below the knee on 17 September 1862. His discharge occurred at Elmira, NY on 22 May 1863. The enlistment documents give his description as; 5 feet, 8 inches tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. He said that his occupation was Tinner and Student. He gave the name of his first wife, Sarah Rogers and the names of his two boys by that marriage, but didn't give birth or death dates of those children; only saying that they died in infancy. The file gives birth dates of the three children by his second marriage and in an answer to a 1915 inquiry by Department of the Interior; he says that only his two boys are still alive. Clara's middle name has usually been considered as Dot; while Samuel uses the name of Dorothy. Samuel gives his marriage date to his first wife as 25 March 1868 and in Louisa's Widows Application she gives a date for the first marriage as 6 March 1869. It is likely that Samuel's date is more accurate than his second wife’s. The Civil War Pension records give his birth as 7 Jul, 1843, while the 1900 census records it as July 1842.¹

     Samuel C. Hotchkin was born circa 1820 at CT, USA. He married Mary Unknown at CT.

     Probate records show that Mary the mother of James is appointed his guardian after the death of his father Samuel C. Hotchkin; probate file #5243, dated 10 My 1743. In this record James, a minor, is left 100 lbs to Mary his guardian.

     Samuel Hotchkin Esq. was born on 4 May 1818 at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, USA. Passport Application. He was the son of James Hervey Hotchkin Rev. and Rebecca Hall. He married Margaret Canfield Doremus at New York City, New York County, NY, USA, on 8 July 1840.² Samuel Hotchkin Esq. appeared on the census of 1850 at Pomfret, Chautauqua County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Samuel, 31, b NY, lawyer, wife Saphrona, 31, dau Catherine, 6, living in family of Charles F. Matteson, 35. Not sure if this is the same Samuel.. He resided at Fredonia, Chautauqua County, NY, USA, in 1851. He married Mary C. Gray at Elmira, Chemung County, NY, USA, circa 1857.³ Samuel Hotchkin Esq. lived in between 1876 and 1877 at Elmira, Chemung County, NY. The City Directory lists him as running a Flouring Mill at 301 to 307 West Water St and living at 660 Park Place.⁴ He appeared on the census of 1880 at Elmira, Chemung County, NY. The census lists the family as: Sami. Hotchkin, Self, M, Male, W, 62, born NY, Miller, parents born in MA; wife Mary G., 48, born NY, Keeping House, parents born in NY; dau, Aurelia, 21, born in NY, invalid; other, Bridget McNeney, 38, born in IRE, parents born in IRE.. He resided at Elmira, Chemung County, NY, in 1885. He died on 12 February 1895 at Elmira, Chemung County, NY, at age 76.^5,6

     Samuel ran a prosperous business in Elmira, NY. The Prattsburg News reports him visiting his father, Rev James H. in 1885. Fredrick A. Canfield in his book on the The Canfield Families mistakenly describes Samuel as the son of Rev Beriah Hotchkin. He married Margaret Doremus of Elmira, NY in NYC. At the time of his father's death he lived in Fredonia, NY and the local newpaper referred to him as Esq. in reporting his father's death.
     The 1850 census has a Samuel Hotchkin living in Pomfrey with a wife Saphrona and a daughter Catherine. This Samuel is a lawyer and the birth dates for the wife and daughter match those of wife Margaret and daughter Caroline, so it is believed that these are the same people.
     According to a publication called Elmira Historical Pageant, Samuel built a dam across the Cheumg River in 1828 and erected a flour mill at the site.⁵

     Samuel Fitch Hotchkin Rev. was born on 2 April 1833 at Sauquoit, Oneida County, NY, USA.      Samuel was the Author of many volumes of books on religious matters and local history during his years in Philadelphia. A Book Reviewer of his York Road, says, "Now and then an earnest indefatigable man appears who gathers up all the facts, tradition and romance of a neighborhood and sends it down the ringing grooves of time." The titles of many of his books are listed in the footnotes. He was educated at the New Jersey Academy, Mt. Holly; and studied at Middlebury College, VT; but most of his college life was spent at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut. A sketch of his life appears in the back of his book, The Bristol Pilke. He graduated from the Episcopal Theological Seminary in New York City and was ordained at Trinity Church, New York. For 30 years he was Rector of St. Lukes Episcopal Church, Philadelphia and is buried in their courtyard. He was married twice but had no children by either marriage. His widow, Helen was residing in Feasterville, PA in 1929. At the time of his death, his obituary listed him as, "Registrar of the Diocese of Pennsylvania."      Sandra Carol Hotchkin is the daughter of Leo Dixon Hotchkin and Grace G. Brand. She married Charles J. Blattner on 16 September 1956.¹ Sandra was divorced from Charles J. Blattner on 14 June 1976.
