     The History of Sangamon County, gives his birth to Herman and Mary Hitchcock Hotchkin in Madison County, NY. According to this history he went to Sangamon County, IL in 1876 where he first engaged in farming for four years, and then bought a merchandising store handling groceries and drugs in the village of Curran. In addition, he became Postmaster of that village in 1880, and also Ticket and Express-agent. He sold his store and general merchandise stock to Samuel L. Foster in 1882. The Sangamon County History says that he married Clara C. Bradley, daughter of Louis and Amanda Ransom Bradley in February 1876 and their family consists of one son, Albert L. Hotchkin. Otis is next found in the 1900 census of Nodaway Co., MO with a son D. Ernest but with Albert now absent from the family. Albert is now old enough that he may be on his own, but the 1900 census says that they only had one son and have one living: so this family is very confusing.⁶

The registration card gave additional information on him: "He gives his age as 24, born 14 Nov 1892 in Watertown, NY. He is a receiving teller at Jefferson Beauty in Watertown. He is single and his mother is dependent on him. He does not give her name.". He married Florence I. Baker at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, on 20 September 1919.^4,5 Paul Lincoln Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1920 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Paul B. (?), age 28, b NY, accountant for paper mill; wife Florence, age 37, b NY, father born England, mother born NY, teacher in public school; Pauls mother Mary C., age 51, widow, b NY, father born in Canada, mother in Ireland...      Paul L. appears in the 1921 Watertown City Directory with his wife Florence I., living with his mother Mary C. He is employed at the Remington Paper and Power Co. as an assistant secretary. Starting in 1922 the company is called Hanna Paper Corp. and in 1924 his job changes to accountant and then in 1939 he is described as a US Bank Examiner. A Paul Hotchkin, born 14 November 1892 and died in April 1963 in Ohio is listed in the Social Security Death records.

Paul M. Hotchkin, 60, born IL, Mechanical Engineering, Citrus Grower; wife Edna B., 40, born IL, high school.. He died on 12 June 1971 at San Diego, San Diego County, CA, USA, at age 86.^6,7 He was buried at Rosehill Cemetery, at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA, .⁸

     We know that Paul was born in Chicago, according to a biography published in "Who's Who in Chicago," and that he lived for a while in Elkhart, Indiana near the home of Dana H. Hotchkin. Later he is found in Los Angeles, and then San Diego, CA. His biography says that, "he was a manufacturer, son of C. Marion Hotchkin and Emma Palmer; a graduate of Lewis Institute in engineering; married Jannette May Bean of Los Angeles in 1906; and had two daughter, Paula Jannette and Marette Frances. He was a self-employed mechanical engineer from 1906 to 1908 when he joined the Curtis Lighting Co., a group of National X-Ray Reflector of New York. Since 1911 he had been a Vice President of Curtis. Paul was a Republican, Protestant and a member of the La Grange Suburban and La Grange Country Clubs. He enjoyed big game hunting and fishing. His home was at 204 S. Spring Ave, La Grange and his office at 1119 West Jackson Blvd, Chicago."
     Paul invented and patented an early shock-absorbing device called, "The Hotchkin Anti-Jolt Device." This invention is described in a small book by that title and deposited in the Chicago Public Library. At the 1910 Chicago City Directory he is listed as a Superintendent at 119 W. Jackson St, and residing at 1455 E. 54th St. The 1928 Polk Directory of Chicago has him living at 204 S. Spring St., and a Vice President of Curtis Lighting Co., in Chicago.
     Paul's Will, dated 19 October 1966 says that he was a resident of the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles and was to be buried next to his first wife Jannett, North of #97914, Grave #6, Lot #17, Sec 3; Rose Hill Cemetery, Chicago, IL, 60626. The Will says that both of his daughters were dead at the date of his Will. Paul's Death Certificate confirms the dates of his birth and his death, which occurred at 3:15 AM at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, CA. It gives his widow as Edna Hawk Hotchkin living at 16791 Acena Drive, San Diego, CA; father Charles Hotchkin ( C. Marion Hotchkin), mother Emma Palmer, both born in New York. The certificate says that he died of Arteriosclerosis Heart Disease with Acute Myocardial. He had been a resident of California for 21 years but only 7 months in San Diego County. The Death Certificate gave his last employment as Curtis Lighting in Chicago and his job position as a mechanical engineer, where he had worked for 55 years. Poway-Bernarde Mortuary cremated Paul’s body at Eternal Hills Cemetery; but there is no indication as to whether any monument was placed on the Chicago grave where he had requested that he be buried.

     Paula Jannette Hotchkin was born on 11 September 1908 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA. Birth announced in the Los Angeles Times.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Paul Marion Hotchkin and Jannette May Bean. Paula Jannette Hotchkin married Robert J. Smith on 5 October 1933 at Chicago, Cook County, IL. Cook County, IL Marriages 1930 - 1960. She married Unknown Rittenhouse at IL, USA, circa 1935. Indication of this marriage is found in her father's Will.. Paula Jannette Hotchkin died on 31 January 1998 at Prescott, Yavapai County, AZ, USA, at age 89.⁴

     The Chicago Birth Records have a birth date of 26 August 1910 for Paula Jannette and one of 11 September 1908 for Paula. It is believed that the 26 August birth is the correct one for our Paula. There is likely a confusion over Paula and Palua Jannette and possibly even the marriage to Rittenhouse if her father's Will really refered to a death date before 1966.

     Paula Michelle Hotchkin was born on 17 August 1969 at IL, USA. She was the daughter of Frank Edward Hotchkin and Doris Short. Paula Michelle Hotchkin married Leon Robert Fitterer at MN, USA. Paula Michelle Hotchkin died in 1994.

     Pauline was born at Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, USA, on 7 November 1896. Pauline is age 13 at the 1910 census..^1,2 She was the daughter of Alexander Semple Hotchkin and Jennie F. Russell. Pauline Darrel Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1930 at Berkeley, Alameda County, CA, USA. The census lists the family as: Pauline Hotchkin, 32 (1897), OK, single, parents born in TX, Secretary in Department Store; sister Margaret, 26, single, OK, parents born in TX, Nurse in Doctors Office.. She was employed by the Presbyterian Church. Pauline died on 10 October 1971 at San Francisco, San Francisco County, CA, USA, at age 74.³

     Pauline never married and worked most of her life for the Presbyterian Church. Many of her assignments were in the foreign missions branch and some of the early years were in New York City; but in the late 1960's she moved to San Francisco and worked as Travel Director for the Presbyterian Foreign Missions. She was also the Libraian at the Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco. Her employment application is on file with the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia and furnishes a number of comments and information on her. A church pastor, where she had worked, said, "Pauline is as near perfect as any girl I ever knew, a girl of unusual Christian character and thoroughly trustworthy and capable." This application said that she was a graduate of the University of California, AB. She gave her birth location as Wynnewood, OK.

     Pearl E. Hotchkin was born on 2 June 1894 at Benton Harbor, Berrien County, MI, USA. Her marriage documents say that she was born in Greenville, MI.^1,2 She was the daughter of William Smith (Will) Hotchkin and Maroa (Roa) Lason. Pearl E. Hotchkin married Archie S. Douglas on 5 January 1918 at Pontiac, Oakland County, MI, USA.³ Pearl E. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1920 at Lincoln, Alcona County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: Joseph Shaw, 60, widow; servant Pearl Douglas, 25, divorced, servant, born MI; servants son Ralph, 1 3/12, born NE.. She married Frank De Loss Gorham after 1920. Pearl E. Hotchkin married James Dodd on 17 November 1920 at Standish, Arenac County, MI, USA.³ Pearl E. Hotchkin lived in 1937 at Gobles, Van Buren County, MI, USA. At Emma Kinman Hotchkin's death she is called a daughter and Mrs Pearl Gorham of Goble, MI. She lived in February 1945 at Dowagiac, Cass County, MI, USA. Lived here at time of her sons death according to his obituary. She died in January 1981 at Berrien Springs, Berrien County, MI, USA, at age 86.²

     George W. Hotchkin says that she died about 1985 in Dowagiac or Niles, MI. Anthony V. Hotchkin furnished the information that she married a man by name of Frank Gorham. Michigan records give a marriage to James Dodd on 17 Nov 1920.

     Pearl May Hotchkin was born on 20 November 1916 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA.¹ She was the daughter of William Mead Hotchkin and Pearl May Grant. She married George John Asthalter at Grahamsville, Sullivan County, NY, USA, on 5 December 1936.² She resided at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, USA, in 1993. Pearl May Asthalter of Liberty, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 3, 2008 at her home. She was 91.
The daughter of the late William and Pearl May Grant Hotchkin, she was born November 20, 1916 in the Town of Neversink, NY.
Pearl's family owned and operated the Hotchkin House in Aden, NY. Pearl comes from a large family. She had four brothers, Albert, George, William, and Earl, and four sisters, Eva May, Nellie, Philena, and Mary. Mary is the only surviving sibling. Pearl May Grant married George J. Asthalter on December 5, 1936. George and Pearl owned George J. Asthalter Excavation, Inc. in Liberty, NY. They loved to travel the world and they loved deep sea fishing. George and Pearl had a beautiful hunting camp that she would go to every evening to feed the deer. They both loved the outdoors. Pearl was a wonderful cook and she made sure that her family and extended family had a filling lunch on the table every day. She was a very loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Pearl was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church of Liberty.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Siegel of Liberty, NY and Joan Adele Cheh of Forestburgh, NY; five grandsons: Joseph Siegel and his wife, April, Steven Siegel and his wife, Kim, Robert Siegel and his wife, Michelle, William Siegel and his wife, Nancy, Christian Cheh and his wife, Heather; two granddaughters, Barbara Ann Schmidt and her husband, Derek and Alexa Mickelson and her husband, Ron; 15 great grandchildren: Hunter, Dorian, Harley, Hailey, Kristen, Lindsie, Andrew, Jessica, William Benjamin, Joseph J., Joshua, Summer Pearl, Breckin, Kelgin and Amelia Claire; one great granddaughter, Quinn Alexandria and several nieces and nephew. She was predeceased by her loving husband, George, in September of 1983.

     Peggy Louise Hotchkin was born on 12 July 1946 at Culpeper, Culpeper County, VA, USA. She was the daughter of Elmer F. Hotchkin and Gladys Mae Bowen. Peggy Louise Hotchkin married Cecil Eugene Welcher circa 1965. Peggy Louise Hotchkin married Thomas Bailey circa 1975. Peggy Louise Hotchkin died on 8 September 1981 at Culpeper, Culpeper County, VA, at age 35. She was buried at Fairview Cemetery, at Culpeper, Culpeper County, VA, USA, . Peggy was the beloved daugther of Gladys Mae Bowen Hotchkin and sister of Fannie Mae Pr***z. She also gave birth to two children, the eldest, Pennie Welcher Rhodes, in 1969 and in the early '70's, a son named Aaron Welch, of Flint Hill, VA.

Peggy was a good student and a popular girl in her school days. She had many friends and a large family who loved her.

She was married twice, first to Cecil Eugene Welcher, of Natural Bridge, VA, and later to Thomas Bailey of Brandy Station, VA.

At the time of her passing, she was just 35 years old. Peggy died at Culpeper Memorial Hospital on September 8, 1981, after briefly being in a coma..

     Philena Hotchkin was born on 6 December 1911 at Sullivan County, NY, USA.¹ She was the daughter of William Mead Hotchkin and Pearl May Grant. She married Henry Pipa at Debruce, Sullivan County, NY, USA, on 25 February 1930.² Philena Hotchkin and Henry Pipa were divorced circa 1935. She married Edward Heisler at Grahamsville, Sullivan County, NY, USA, on 7 August 1937.³ She resided at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, USA, in 1993.
