Marriage announcement in the Chicago Daily Tribune..4 Helen Medora Hotchkin died on 15 February 1987 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, CA, USA, at age 89.3,1
At the 1910 census of Chicago, she is living with brothers Harry and Merritt. Helen may have had a twin brother as the Chicago births 1871-1916 show a Harry M. (Cert #6236) with the same 7-11-1897 birth date. It is likely; however, that this is just a mistake in her name as no other sign of this brother has been found.
A descendant of her family says that Helen was an amazing woman. She was a Founding Member of the Womans League in Utah and a Smith Metal recipient frm Smith College.

Heman Hotchkin in an early tin type picture.
The assignment of George and Sarah as parents is based on there living next door at the 1850 Census and Heman naming his first son, George. They are also buried together in the Campbell burying Grounds, Lebanon, Madison Co., NY; further confirming the relationship.
The Madison County real estate records have a number of transactions by Heman: 20 July 1861, Heman and wife sell to Jaliez Billings, CT 369, Heman and Mary H., his wife, of Lebanon; 15 May 1865, Heman and wife to Mason A. Laselle, Bk104, pg380; 12 February 1866, Heman and Mary H., his wife, Bk107, pg180.
Most of Heman's and Mary's children died in Lebanon and their birth and death dates are recorded in the cemetery records. Only the stones for Henry and George M. are still standing in the Hitchcock Family plot. Stones for the children's mother Mary Hitchcock and children Beriah, Mary, Servilia are in a pile against a nearby bush. The Compiler and his wife Cathy had to carefully move each stone to read the inscription. No stone was found for Joseph. From the death dates on the stones, Beriah, Servilia, and Mary died within four days in October 1862. George died after cutting off his toe according to the cemetery records. Also buried with this group is Sarah, wife of Henry, died 3 April 1851, age 75 years and 3 months. Heman is buried in the Cleon Twp Cemetery, Manistee Co., MI where he moved after the death of his 3rd wife and most of his children. We know that Hemam lived in Niagara Co., NY for a while as he is there at the 1870 census. Living with him are his children Otis, Marcia, Ruth, Hattie, and Jay. There is also a 59-year-old female, Emeline, born in NY. Emeline is not indicated as a wife; however, her Will indicates that they were married. The 1869 Directory of Niagara Co. show Heman in Pekin, Cambria, a farmer with 48 1/2 acres on Lot 28, T 14, R.S. At the 1880 census of Lewiston Twp., Niagara Co., he is married to Maria, age 59, born in NY, and both parents born in CT. Living with them is son Jay H. and daughter Marcia. According to the Lockport Daily Journal, the marriage to Marie occurred on 18 December 1875. She was called Mrs. Marie Beebe, so Beebe is not her maiden name.

Little is known about Henry except the information that appears in the O'Hairs Funeral Home records and his Will which was admitted to Probate on 24 January 1936 in Klamath Co., OR. He was a Rancher and Stockman and lived in Beatty, Klamath Co., OR. His wife's name was Luella Holwe or Hilland, but they were divorced at the time of his death (the records are very hard to read and it is not clear whether they are divorced or she is dead, but she did not attend the funeral). The funeral arrangements and payment were made by his daughter, Mrs Marie Baldwin of San Francisco (Marie is also called Mary in the Will). At this date, she lived at 1275 Bay Street, San Francisco. The Will says that his personal property consisted of a team, some cattle and farm machinery; all valued at about $500 and his real estate was 400 acres of pasture land and sage brush, near Beatty, OR. This property was valued at approximately $3,000, but had a mortgage of $1,500. The Will doesn't give an age for Marie but says that daughter Hazel is aged about 40 years. Hazel's address is given as Whitney, OR. Fred is not mentioned so he may be dead at this date. Funeral records say that Henry had lived in Oregon for twenty five years; making his entry into the state about 1911. These records also say that he was born in Texas, where we have him born in Livingland, Indian Territory. The records give his father as Henry Hotchkin, born in Mississippi (known to not be true) and his mother Mary Semple, born in Ohio. Henry Jr.'s birth in Texas may be true as the family lived along the Red River dividing Oklahoma and Texas and were known to have lived on both sides of the river at various times. A real estate record, dated 18 April 1916 shows a transfer from the Klamath Development Co., to Fannie H. Delzell and Henry Hotchkin of Chiloquin. On 20 December 1920 he Quit Claimed property to Fannie McClure and her husband, W. N. McClure, in Klamath Co., OR.
His mother Mary wrote a little about him in her autobiography. She said that he spent several years in Colorado where he was a contractor for the state and was a farmer, rancher and miner. From Colorado he went to Oregon where he was a contractor for the state. She said that he died at Klamath Falls.

He is buried with his daughter Mamie and mother Philena..

Henry was born at his parents’ Goodwater Mission in 1837 and is buried near the Livingland Mission on a private ranch. Ebenezer Jr., in his notes on file with the Presbyterian Historical Society, lists Henry’s children as Lena, Robert, John, James, Ebenezer, Mamie, Alex and Henry. The Compiler has never found any other information on Robert or James. Luther B. Hill in his History of the State of Oklahoma, says that Henry was a life long farmer, except for his service in the Commissary Department of the Confederate Army. The Compiler has found no evidence of a Confederate Military position but the attached Exhibits show that he did furnish supplies. Henry is the only Hotchkin known to be actively on the Confederate side of the Civil War. This same publication gives Henry’s birth in 1834 instead of 1837. A letter, preserved and published in the Chronicles of Oklahoma, describes the author meeting Mr. Henry Hotchkin and Miss Mary Semple on 12 June 1860. It said, “Mr. Hotchkin, a son of the first missionary at Goodwater is to accompany the ladies, ( Mrs. Ainslie and Miss Semple) as far as Napoleon, where they will take the boat. Miss Semple has been here for the time for which she was engaged, but if her health improves, she expects to return in the autumn as Mr. Hotchkin’s wife.”.4,5
