The registration card gave additional information on him: "He says that he is 21, born 31 July 1896 in Wynnwood, OK. He is working as a student in a US Government training camp at Fort Logan, AZ. He is single and has no dependents. He calls himself A. Earl Hotchkin.". He registered for the World War I Draft on 2 May 1917. The registration card gave additional information on him: "Single and living at 15th and Elm St, Durant, OK". He was Manager in 1920 at Sherman, Grayson County, TX, USA, He operated a Firestone Tire Store. He married Thelma Unknown at OK, USA, in 1921.      According to the 1920-21 Durant City Directory, Earl A. boarded with his parents, at 1501 W. Elm St., and was a teller at the Durant National Bank. Earl and his wife Thelma lived in Sherman, TX, according to the Polk Directory in 1930-31 and he was manager of the local Firestone Service Store. Firestone must have moved him to Ft Worth because from at least 1935 to 1961, according to the Ft. Worth City Directories, he managed and was a salesman with Firestone Auto Supply and Service. His wife Thelma was with him at the 1935 Directory and until at least 1942. At the issue of the 1959 Directory, his wife is indicated as Joella. While living in Ft. Worth, his addresses were; 1935, 3836 Bunting Ave; 1941, 1608 Ashland; and finally in 1959, 4329 Cummings Dr.
     Alfred and his wife Joella were among the Hotchkin's that owned property and vacationed at Tin Cup, Colorado. The first transfer is from Cora Belle Luce (formerly Core Belle Nissen) to Alfred E. Hotchkin on 12 July 1955; where she granted Lot 9, Block 32 in Book 335, pg 293. On 6 August 1958, this same person, granted to Alfred, Lot 10, Block 32. In 1966 there is a grant from Joella O. Hotchkin, a single woman, to Alfred of these same lots. This must have been part of the divorce settlement. A year later on 16 November 1967, Book 400, pg 41, Alfred and a new wife, Susie K., both living in Tarrant Co., TX, grant these same lots to Horace M. and Louise D.Lansford. Attending his funeral, according to Holmes Funeral Home records, were sisters, Christine Ryan from Sherman, TX, Mary Stephenson from Antlers, OK, Ann Wainwright from Sherman, and Lil DuLaney From Sherman. Rev Gainer conducted the services in the Holmes Chapel at Ft Worth, TX. Earl is buried in Highland Cemetery, Durant, OK adjacent to his parents and his baby son Alfred Earl Jr. His gravestone says Alfred Earl Hotchkin 7-31-1896 to 6-11-1968. His wife is not buried with him so it is likely that she survived him for some time and remarried. Social Security records confirm his birth date and give death date as June 1968.
     Peggy Lou Clark Stephenson agrees that Alfred had three marriages but does not give the surnames exactly as the Compiler found them. Peggy says that Alfred and Thelma had a son who died within a few days of birth. She calls his second wife Jo Ellen and says that they adopted a son, while living in Ft Worth; and after their divorce, he married Sue, who also lived in Ft Worth.

Hotchkin, May 1842, 58, widower, born NY, parents born NY, commercial leather goods, living in large boarding house.. He appeared on the census of 1910 at Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Alfred G. Hotchkin, 67, Widow, NY; boarder with Thomas Walsh, 49.. He appeared on the census of 1920 at Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY, USA.      The Village Directories of Jefferson Co. lists Alfred J. Hotchkin as a boarder in the home of his father, B. F. Hotchkin, 29 Clinton St., Watertown, NY. At the 1870 Census, he is living close to other member of his family in Watertown, with his wife Cornelia. They have no children.
     Alfred owned an interest in a Carriage Works in the city of Syracuse, NY and documents at the Onondaga Historical Association tell a story of this enterprise. "A new carriage, boxed for shipment, fell from the wagon of Hotchkin’s & Wilder yesterday, as it was being conveyed to the railroad for shipment. This is the second mishap of that kind that has occurred to the firm within a few days." (Syracuse Std 1 May 1884). Another account from the Syracuse Journal, 23 Sep 1884 tells of the bankruptcy of the firm of Hotchkin & Wilder. "The bankruptcy was due to the death of a Director of Importers and Traders at the National Bank of New York who secured loans for Hotchkin & Wilder." This death stopped the loans needed for operation. A clipping dated, Syracuse Standard 17 Jan 1885, said, "Yesterday, W. B. Clark of Waterloo, assignee of the insolvent estate of Hotchkin & Wilder, was in the city negotiating for the sale of the tools and machinery of the bankrupt, to a proposed new firm of carriage manufacturers, provided a satisfactory arrangement can be made with P. W. Fobes for a lease of the works in Geddes." Hotchkin must have resumed the business later because the Onondaga Historical Association has a picture of a buggy, which appeared in the Herald on 15 Feb 1888, which claims, "The best general purpose wagon, patented 25 January 1887." The files include information on a later business failure. This one is titled, "The Hotchkin Failure," and dated 11 July 1888. It says that, "the assets of Cornelia P. Hotchkin, wife of Alfred J., has been assigned to Hiram W. Plumb for benefit of her creditors." The cause of this failure was a fire that occurred about 9 June. The article claims that there was a total of $34,573.11 of Notes signed by A. J. Hotchkin or Cornelia P. Hotchkin as part of the liabilities, besides 101 employees owed money. The total liabilities, not covered by assets, amounted to $130,936.95. The files also contain a letter dated, 16 July 1890 in which Alfred J. Hotchkin assigns $600.00 of his rights and title to the estate of his mother, Jane M. Hotchkin, to Jane Livingston Armour in exchange for a $500.00 loan. In a letter dated, 9 August 1890, Saratoga Springs, NY, the Note was returned to Cornelia P. Hotchkin in exchange for $500.00.
     Alfred is listed in the Syracuse City Directories of 189798 and 189899 as a Commercial Traveler, living at 213 and 215 Green St. His birth and death are recorded in the records of Waterville Cemetery, and he is buried with his wife Cornelia.^3,4,5

     The 1850 census calls him Alfred M. and a newspaper clipping in Caledonia, NY says that he married Kittie Osburn on 7 October 1895. This article called him A.M. Hotchkin and described him as son of Augustus. Alfred was not listed with his family at the 1855 NY state census of Caledonia. Talcott gives his marriage to his cousin Charlotte. The marriage to Kittie Osborn doesn't seem possible based on the 1910 census of Meadville, PA, which says that he and Lotta M. (Charlotte ?) have been married 39 years. He gave his age as 18 and birth at Caledonia, NY on 4 January 1862, when he enlisted in the Civil War. Alfred M. appears in the Rochester City Directories for years 1872 through 1875 as a Laborer. He always resided at the home of his brother George N. Hotchkin. At the 1920 census, he is in Meadville as a boarder with Elmer Brown (likely because George had moved to Meadville.)
     Alfred enlisted as a Pvt in Co I, 13th NY Infantry at Rochester, NY and was mustered in on 4 December 1861. His desertion was claimed on 11 August 1862, but he arrived at Camp Distribution, Alexandria, VA on 27 August 1862 and was admitted to Camp Convalescent where he was released on 4 January 1863 and discharged from the service on 9 February 1863. The desertion charge was admitted as an error. His illness was described as TB. An A. Hotchkin, Pri., Co. B, 12th Regt., PA appears in the records of the Andersonville, GA prison camp. These records say that he was in the 4th squad, 5th mess and was transferred to Camp Laughtin, Miller, GA on 11 November 1864.

     The Death Certificate gives his death date as 4 September 1930 at age 53 in Los Angeles. It says that his parents were John C. Hotchkin and Henrietta Lock, his wife’s initials were F., and that he was born in Kansas. The certificate says that his death was due to suicide by strangulation, from constriction around the neck, at the Norwalk State Hospital. He had been there 1 month at time of death and 2 months in California. The birthplace of his father is given as New York and his mother as Illinois. The Los Angeles City Directories show him in that city from 1914 to 1920. In 1914 he was a bookkeeper and lived at 335 Newland; wife Florence M. was a dressmaker. In 1920 Allen lived at 1116 Spence, also the residence of his father John C., and was a cashier for the Pacific Commercial Warehouse. At the death of his Aunt, Mary J. Angier, he was granted property by Will in Oneida Co., NY, 2 June 1899, Libra 522, pg 112. The 1900 census of Chicago, IL has him living, as a boarder, with John T. Hart at 732 W. 63rd Court, age 23, born Jan 1877. This date differs from other information. At the 1910 Census of Indian Valley, Washington Co., IA, T624, Roll 228, Pg273, he is listed as Allen H. Hotchkin, age 33, born in Kansas and living with his wife, Florence, age 33, born in Michigan, and his mother, Henrietta, age 61, born in Illinois.

Case, Apr 1875, 25. married one year, born NY, parents born NY; dau-in-law Butie, Sep 1874, 25, born NY, dress maker.. She died on 7 August 1916 at NY at age 79.
