DELHI, NY — Hubert Arthur Harwood, 83, of Delhi, former longtime Stamford resident, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

The son of Raymond E. and Dorothy Frances (Andrews) Harwood, he was born Sept. 27, 1920, in Lynn, Mass., moving to New York City, where he was a boy-soprano in St. Agnes Choir, Trinity Parish, awarded the distinguished "Watson Medal" in 1935, later continuing his vocal training with the noted Pasquale Rubino.

A graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School, he attended New York University and was employed by Consolidated Edison of New York in early years.

A veteran of both World War II and the Korean era, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps the day after the Pearl Harbor attack, serving in the 1st Marine Division, and fought in the battles of Guadal Canal, New Guinea and New Britain. After two years in the Pacific, he was returned to Camp LeJeune, N.C.

He married Catherine L. Kaufmann of Stamford in 1945. The marriage ended in divorce and he subsequently married Jean (Hotchkin) Dreyfus of Delhi in 1961. She died Feb. 25, 2003.

After working as cashier of the National Bank of Stamford, "Hugh" was hired by the late Fred P. Murphy to run Prospect Dairy Inc., "Hi-Health" milk products, Stamford. He expanded the business to include 32 counties in New York state, which led him into beginning a chain of 62 convenient food stores from Albany to Westchester and Rockland counties, and in the Hartford-New Haven areas of Connecticut, with the company headquarters moving to Cold Spring. During this time, he also served as the director of the Fishkill National Bank.

In 1978, he sold the company and moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where he became the Special Projects Manager for Circle K Corporation, operating 1,200 convenience stores in the Southwest. Through his contacts there, he launched a new business in Sydney, Australia, developing a chain of convenience stores, "Quick Stop Food Shops" of which he was also managing director.

After two and a half years, he returned to the United States, and in recent years had been residing in Delhi, where he will be remembered in the community for his enthusiastic vocal performances.

He is survived by his children, Susan Harwood of Albany, and John (Carol) Harwood of Stamford; step-children, Ann Dreyfus and Deborah Dreyfus of Saratoga Springs, and Lynn (Patricia) Dreyfus of Queensbury; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Nancy Truscott officiating, after which the family will receive friends. Burial with military honors by Donald W. Gleason Post 190, American Legion, of which Hugh was a member, will be 2:30 p.m. in the Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hubert A. Harwood Memorial Vocal Scholarship Fund, care of Delaware National Bank, Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi..1 He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, at Jefferson, Schenectady County, NY, USA.
